Making a booking

How do I book a RedSands?

You can complete a booking here, give our friendly reservations team a call on +61 8 6149 8555, or send us an email at res@redsandscampers.com.au

How do I know if a RedSands is available for the travel dates I need?

Use our get a quote function on our website to check availability. You can also directly contact our reservations team to confirm that your dates are available. We strongly encourage people to check availability of campers before booking flights.

What if my travel dates are not available?

If your plans are flexible, we can provide alternative options and hopefully find something that works for you. We can also add you to our waitlist and will get in touch if your dates become available.

Should I book my airfares or my vehicle first?

Please book your vehicle first to avoid disappointment. Our vehicles are often booked well in advance, especially for popular holiday periods.

What are the differences between your vehicles?

We offer a full range of camping and touring vehicles - from Rooftop Campers to Walk-In Campers, and from 2WD Campervans and Motorhomes to a 4WD Prado, which is perfect if you'd like to stay in fixed accommodation during your trip.

For a full overview of all inclusions, please refer to our handy comparison table.

How do I secure my booking and how do I pay?

You can secure your booking by paying a A$2,000 deposit via credit/debit card. RedSands will then deduct the remaining balance due 55 days prior to travel from this card. Standard credit card charges apply. We also have the option of transferring funds to our Australian bank account via international transfer, which we recommend Wise for.

At the time of booking, we recommend you take out the highest level of personal travel insurance for your trip, as RedSands is unable to act as a travel insurer if you are unable to travel.

How old do I need to be to hire from RedSands?

All drivers must be at least 25 years old.

How many kilometres are included in the daily rate?

RedSands Campers offers unlimited kilometres so you can freely explore without being limited to short distances each day, or extra kilometre fees.

Can I make changes to my booking?

We will try our best to accommodate any change requests (e.g. dates, locations or vehicle type) but we cannot guarantee there will be availability. Please refer to our Terms and Conditions for any fees and/or charges that may apply to changing a booking.

What else do I need to pay for?

The good thing about choosing a RedSands vehicle, is that everything is included – chairs, tables, bedding, fully equipped kitchen, safety equipment. At first glance our competitors rates may seem cheaper, but when you add all the extra’s that should come with your vehicle, there is often little difference. One big difference is that with a RedSands you are getting the best equipped hire vehicle available!

After booking, the only remaining payment is the Security Bond or the credit card authorisation linked to your selected Wander Far Liability Reduction Option (if chosen). The credit card must be in the name of the main hirer or an approved additional driver, and that cardholder must be present at vehicle pick-up.

Please note that if you are unable to provide the required Bond or authorisation at pick-up, we will unfortunately be unable to release the vehicle. For our international guests: please ensure your bank is aware of your travel plans and that your card is enabled for transactions with Australian merchants.

How much is the bond and when will I get it back?

The bond over our beloved 4WD Campers, Motorhomes 'The Frontier' and Land Cruiser Prado’s is AUD$5,000. The bond over our Campervans 'The Cruiser' is AUD$2,500.

Whilst our terms state we have up to 21 days to return the bond to you, we always aim to return within 10 business days. Of course, in the unfortunate event of any damage occurring, we will need to get quotes to bring the vehicles back to pre-hire condition so this is where delays may occur. Our friendly team will always keep you informed throughout this process.

Can I reduce my liability in the case of an accident?

Yes, we have our ‘Wander Far’ liability reduction option (LRO) available. More information can be found here.

Do you have child and / or booster seats available?

We do! These can be added to your booking free of charge. You can add them yourself if you book via our website, or simply let our Reservations Team know prior to pick-up, and they'll add them for you.

Can I take my dog with me on holiday?

Unfortunately not. Animals of any kind (excluding registered service animals) are prohibited from traveling in our vehicles.

Are your vehicles insured to tow?

No, our vehicles are not. This means it's not permitted to tow any items like camper trailers, caravans etc. with any of our vehicles.

Collecting your vehicle

What time can I collect my vehicle?

Our depots run on an appointment schedule so your collection time is confirmed with you via email prior to your trip.

Where do I pick up from?

Please pick up the vehicle at the depot you have selected. You can find the address and pick-up time in your confirmation email. We also send a reminder email and SMS two days before your hire begins.

What happens when I collect the vehicle and how much time should I allow?

One of our friendly depot staff will process all the paperwork and then run through a detailed demonstration of the vehicle. This demonstration will familiarise you with all of its great features and get you comfortable prior to departure. Please allow between 1 and 1.5 hours for this process, or 45 minutes if you hire a 4WD Prado.

What documentation should I bring along with me?

Our reservations team will contact you prior to your journey to collect your drivers license details. However we recommend you bring your national driver’s license along for all people who plan on driving the vehicle and a credit card that is is as security for the hire. If your driver's license was not issued in Australia, an International Drivers Permit is also required to legally drive in Australia. Please note RedSands Campers only requires your national driver's licence though.

Can I leave some of my luggage at your depot during my trip?

Absolutely! We offer free luggage storage. Just leave your items with us, and we’ll keep them safe for you until you pick them up again.

Please note we are unable to send any luggage to one of our other depots, your home address or hotel. This means you will need to organise pick-up of your luggage yourself.

Can I get the vehicle registration number prior to pick-up?

We are not able to provide the vehicle registration number before you pick up your vehicle, as last-minute changes can happen. If you need to fill out a vehicle registration number to book a campground or ferry, providers usually accept any booking without problems if you state 'Hire vehicle'.

Do you sell any camping items at your depots?

We do! All depots have a small shop with handy items like mozzie spray, beach towels, caps, can inverters and more.

At our Perth and Broome depots, we also stock 4-Week Western Australia Parks Passes. These can be purchased during the pick-up appointment, or added to your booking prior to pick-up and cost $70.

On the road

What should I do if I need assistance during my trip?

We have 24/7 phone support available and advise calling us when you need assistance. Our team are well trained and very knowledgeable, so that they may guide you through any support required during your trip. Our operations team can be contacted on +61 8 6149 8555 (please choose menu option '2').

What if I want to extend my travels or change my drop off location?

Please get in touch with our reservations team for questions about extending your travels. Please note that extensions and location changes may not be possible if we already have bookings scheduled after yours.

Where am I allowed to drive?

One great thing about booking with RedSands is that there are very few restrictions on travel locations or roads. With one of our 4WDs, you are allowed to drive on any formed track and there are no extra fees for driving in remote areas or off road.

To keep the vehicles in top condition we do have a few areas that cannot be driven in, they are:

  • Along the Canning Stock Route, WA
  • K’gari (formerly Fraser Island), QLD
  • Along the Old Telegraph section of Cape York, QLD
  • Below the high tide mark on any beach, or where the vehicle will be exposed to salt water of any kind including salt lakes
  • On any unformed track

If you hire 2WD Campervan 'The Cruiser' or Motorhome 'The Frontier', off-road driving is not permitted. You may however travel on well-maintained unsealed roads for up to 12 kilometres one-way to access recognised campgrounds and National Parks.

This information is included in the booking Terms and Conditions.

Do I need special permission to drive on certain roads?

You may need special permission or permits to drive on Aboriginal land or other areas. We recommend calling ahead to the local Visitor Centre to confirm and to apply for the appropriate permits if needed. Please abide by all relevant laws when travelling in a RedSands.

Can I drive on the Gibb River Road?

Yes you can and we encourage it! Our 4WDs are specially upgraded for off road driving with long-range fuel tanks, upgraded off-road suspension, and high-quality tyres.

Please note 'The Cruiser' and 'The Frontier' are designed for on-road driving, so those vehicles cannot be taken on the Gibb River Road.

Can I drive on the beach?

Absolutely! You are permitted to drive on the beach with any of our 4WDs as long as driving is permitted, however it is entirely at your own risk. Please keep an eye out for marked signs and lower your tyre pressure to reduce impact on the environment. As per our booking Terms and Conditions, you must not drive below the high tide mark (also referred to as the mean high water springs mark).

Please note the vehicle must not come into contact with salt water, under any circumstances.

Our 2WDs 'The Cruiser' and 'The Frontier' cannot be taken onto the beach

Can I camp on the beach?

Yes, you can camp on the beach with your 4WD so long as it’s allowed. Please check with the local visitors centre or local shire council to confirm that camping is allowed.

Do I need to book all campgrounds in advance?

We recommend booking campgrounds in advance as popular spots can book out far in advance, especially during Australian school holiday periods. If you're quite flexible and don't have any 'must-stays' on your list, outside of school holiday periods it's usually fine to be a bit more spontaneous and decide on where to stay on the day itself, or to book 1-2 days in advance.

If in doubt, we recommend emailing or calling the campground during your trip planning stage, to check with them if they usually require bookings or have space for spontaneous 'drive-ins'.

Can I get a fresh set of linen during my trip?

You sure can! We offer a free linen exchange service at any of our depots. Please note this is on an appointment basis only, to ensure great service.

Safety

What safety equipment is included?

All RedSands vehicles come equipped with a Personal Locater Beacon (PLB). These are small, handheld devices that can be activated in a life threatening situation. Doing so will notify emergency services who will work with RedSands to respond to your emergency situation. We suggest taking this with you and placing in your backpack when hiking.

Vehicles also come with first aid kits, snake bite kits and a UHF radios.

A satellite phone can be added to your booking at an additional daily charge. The exact cost depends on the length of your hire. Please contact our friendly Reservations Team about this.

What recovery gear is included?

All our 4WDs include a snatch strap, shackle, jack, shovel and under bonnet air compressor.

As our 2WD Campervans and Motorhomes are designed for on-road driving, no recovery gear is included apart from a jack.

How many spare tyres are provided with the vehicles?

The spare tyre capacity depends on the product category.

Our 4WD Rooftop Campers have 3 spare tyres, our 4WD Prado's and Wanderer range have 2 spare tyres, and our 2WD Campervans and Motorhomes have 1.

How often do your vehicles get checked?

Before every hire! At RedSands Campers, we leave 3 working days between each hire to ensure there is sufficient time to get the vehicle checked by our partner mechanics and tyre and windscreen suppliers, and to allow for a full, comprehensive clean and inventory check. They are also serviced every 10,000 kilometres.

All our vehicles are equipped with trackers, so we know where they are in case help is needed. We can also access information on battery health of each vehicle remotely via our tracking system.

Returning your vehicle

What time can I return my vehicle?

Our depots run on an appointment schedule so your drop off time is confirmed with you via email prior to your trip. Please keep to this time so that you are not kept waiting for staff to finish attending to other guests.

Do I need to return my vehicle in a clean condition?

Yes, please return in a clean condition and refer to your in-vehicle client guide for example photos and the addresses of the local car wash. As a minimum, the vehicles need an outside wash and a vacuum inside to remove sand, dirt, and dust.

What do I need to refill prior to returning the RedSands?

The diesel tank will be full on departure and needs to be full when you return the vehicle. The 2 kg gas bottles are complimentary so they do not need to be filled and neither does the water tank.

How long should I allow to return the vehicle?

The return process should take around 15 – 20 minutes. This gives us time to discuss your adventure and also seek your valuable feedback on your RedSands vehicle.
